After running the custom editor options to allow a group some more features, the editor doesn't load anymore.

I attached an Updated BETA dll which should avoid the saving bug you posted.
I can only guess that because the settings where not correctly saved it has messed up the setting and thats why the editor is not shown.
Did you try to save the Settings for the Portal or Page Instance? Try to Delete the Settings for the Portal to restore the Editor, or try to save the settings again should also fix the problem
